Ein zweites Leben / A Second Life

Ein zweites Leben is the third in a loosely grouped series of exhibitions curated by Barnaby Drabble, which all look at contemporary pop-cultural phenomena and with them the issues of originality, re-enactment, multiple identities, double-agency and parallel worlds.

After the exhibition Burning Love in London in 2000, in which Guy Bar Amotz created a fully functioning Karaoke installation and I almost feel like doing its again... in Zürich in 2005, which featured the works of 5 artists exploring the format of the ‘cover version’. The exhibition which opens in Bern on the 8th of September takes as its point of departure a short and easily overlooked sub-plot in Dashiel Hammet’s legendary detective novel The Maltese Falcon. In the story, Hammet’s detective is sent by a distraught wife to track down her missing husband, who he discovers living a second life which bears an uncanny resemblance to the one he left behind.

The exhibition brings together works from David Blandy, David Henry Brown Jr., Yan Duyvendak, Tim Etchells, Iain Forsyth & Jane Pollard, Paul Harper & Andrea Heller, Annaik Lou Pitteloud, Holger Salach and Gavin Wade.

Hinrich Sachs also contributes, presenting his performance work Untitled (conceptual artist) 2002.

The exhibition can be seen at the Stadtgalerie Pavilion / Loge, Speichergasse 4, 8138, Bern, Switzerland
